Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus praised Donald Trump’s vice presidential choice as “a mature pick” that will help him shore up support among hesitant independent and GOP voters.

On ABC’s “This Week,” Priebus said most voters will be looking at the top of the Republican ticket to decide their vote, but that in choosing Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his vice presidential nominee, Trump was showing a seriousness about the general election.

“He has a lot of space to grow,” said Priebus, “as he pivots to the general election, as he picked Mike Pence.” Priebus added that Trump has “been much more precise in his language.”

Trump announced his selection on Friday, just ahead of the party’s convention in Cleveland, Ohio, where the political world will be focused all week and Trump is officially named the nominee.

“He’s there,” said Priebus, referring to Trump’s readiness. “He knows the pivot is important. He has been better” since winning the primary.
