Change. It’s a word that is tossed about quite cavalierly these days. Some people are afraid of it, while others demand it. Change, in and of itself is neither inherently good or bad. But the change requires adaptation. Change without adaptation leads to dysfunction and chaos.
In the context of this discussion, what is the change affecting the media? The media has always tilted to the left. That has not changed. What has changed is the ecosystem within which the news business operates. The emergence and dominance of the internet has perverted and undermined the news business in ways we are only now beginning to notice, much less understand.
Prior to the rise of the internet, newspapers and magazines dominated the news business. Television news, prior to CNN was not the primary source of news and information for the average American. The major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) carried only 30 minutes of national news programming on a daily basis. Local affiliates focused on local issues. The print news outlets had a business model that relied heavily on classified ads. Many people bought the newspaper specifically for those ads. The revenue streams from advertising allowed newspapers to fund “loss leaders” like investigative journalism. When the internet arrived, however, websites like Craig’s List gave readers for free, something newspapers were charging for. The change was dramatic and the management at print news establishments failed to adequately adapt. They no longer had revenue streams to finance their journalistic investigations. Thousands of jobs were lost and a great many news outlets went bankrupt. But the news still needed to be reported. Instead of doing the journalistic legwork, newspapers went directly to the politicians and bureaucrats themselves of their spokesman. They became wholly reliant of them as sources. What was formerly investigative journalism quickly morphed into advocacy and opposition research posing as journalism. The American free press was no longer really free.
Without the ability to afford a staff of investigative journalists, news media outlets had to remain in the good graces of their sources, the people and organization they were actually reporting on. Of course, this did not mean every embarrassing story or every corruption scandal was ignored. Rather, it meant the balance of power shifted away from an impartial media, towards one more favorably disposed to the wishes of those news sources.
Think about it. If the news outlet lacks the funding for real investigative journalists working hard to uncover facts and controversy, and instead simply takes whatever the news source gives them, becoming little more than a mouthpiece. These “journalists” will gladly comply because they have the pressure of deadlines, insufficient resources to investigate independently and then become almost fully dependent on the news source.
Compounding this problem is the seemingly endless supply of broadcast “journalists” who have spent their careers in partisan politics.
It was once thought unethical to shuttle back and forth between partisan political jobs and a job in journalism. No longer. The list is actually quite astonishing and it is not often discussed, but it’s the best evidence there is that the news media has been corrupted.
For example, take George Stephanopoulos who anchors a one hour political news program on ABC every week. Stephanopoulos was President Clinton’s spokesman and has been a close friend and confidant of both Clintons for decades. Moreover, the executive producer of “This Week”, is the husband of Obama’s national security adviser and former UN Ambassador, Susan Rice.
On top of this, Stephanopoulos also co-hosts Good Morning, America, which airs four hours a day, Monday through Friday, giving this partisan Democrat operative access to 20 hours of airtime on ABC, a national network.
While Stephanopoulos may be the most blatant example of media bias, he is by no means alone. Agenda driven “journalists” and partisans are found throughout the mainstream media.
Jake Tapper at CNN is someone who has gained a measure of success and respect as a journalist who is by today’s standards, fair. Still, Tapper too, has deep ties to the Democrat Party. In the early 1990s, he was the press secretary for Democrat Marjorie Margolies, who later became embroiled in a criminal campaign scandal.
Tapper was also the national spokesman for Hand Gun Control, Inc., the anti-Second Amendment pressure group. Oddly, when Tapper hosted a raucous televises town hall in Parkland, Florida, in the aftermath of the mass school shooting atrocity there, he made no mention of his past association with a leading gun control group and showed no impulse at all to conduct a civil forum. He permitted disgraced police chief, Scott Israel and hostile members of the audience to verbally assault Senator Marco Rubio and NRA spokeswoman, Dana Loesch.
Throughout the Trump era, Tapper has made no secret of his disdain for President Trump. This, coupled with his deep Democrat Party ties, all but obliterate his credibility as an impartial purveyor of the news.
Other high profile news media people tied to the Democrat Party:
>>>Chris Matthews, MSNBC: Formerly President Jimmy Carter’s speechwriter. He also was a staffer for Tip O’Neill, where he helped engineer six government shutdowns during the Reagan Administration. Two facts, Matthews never bothers to mention.
>>>Chuck Todd, NBC: The host of NBC’s Meet the Press was a Senate staffer for former Iowa Senator, Tom Harkin. At the time, Harkin was rated as “most Liberal Senator”. Todd is also married to Kristian Denny-Todd, who is the defense attorney for Jane O’Meara-Sanders, who happens to be the wife of Bernie Sanders. Sanders’ wife came under scrutiny after the college she ran in Vermont went bankrupt. Did Chuck Todd ever point out any of his past associations?
>>>David Gregory, CNN: Chuck Todd isn’t the only host of Meet the Press with strong ties to prominent Democrats through his spouse. David Gregory is married to Beth Wilkinson, a high powered Washington defense lawyer who represented the entire Clinton team swept up in the Clinton unsecured server and email scandal. Yet, when Gregory appeared as a contributor and commentator on CNN to discuss that very scandal, he made no mention of the fact that his wife was their legal counsel, making him less than impartial, at least by all appearances.
>>>Jim Sciutto, CNN: Another partisan Democrat who poses as an impartial news anchor. Sciutto came to CNN straight out of the Obama Administration where he served in a political position, advising President Obama on foreign affairs. In fact, when CNN’s Washington Bureau Chief announced the hiring of Sciutto, no mention was ever mad that he was a political appointee of Obama’s. Sciutto’s job was to report “news” on the administration he once worked for andf who’s policies he advanced. That fails even the most modest effort at journalistic integrity. How convenient!
>>>Chris Cuomo, CNN: the son of former NY Governor, Mario Cuomo and the brother of the current governor, Andrew Cuomo.
>>>Al Sharpton, MSNBC: race hustler and former Democrat Presidential candidate.
>>>David Rhodes, CBS News President, 2011-19: brother to Obama’s National Security Adviser, Ben Rhodes. As President of CBS News, Rhodes was in that role when investigative journalist, Sharyl Attkisson exposed the gun running operation, Fast and Furious. Her reporting was deeply embarrassing to the Obama Administration and some speculate that Attkisson’s exposes stopped making it to CBS’s air and her eventual departure from CBS after a stellar 20+ year career were driven, at least in part, by her dogged determination to report on that scandal and the friction it created with the Obama White House.
These are just a handful of examples outlining the incestuous relationships that have corrupted the American news media. That corruption extends well beyond even that which is outlined here. The super wealthy are also part of this corruption. The New York Times and the Washington Post are both owned by billionaires. The Times by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim and the Post by Jeff Bezos. Both use these newspapers as a vehicle to promote their own interests which have little or nothing to do with impartial, unbiased journalism.
Now, imagine a situation where this merging of the national media and the authority of the permanent government join forces to drive the country in a particular direction that runs counter to the Constitutionally elected leadership’s policies. What we are then faced with is the classic case of an immovable object meeting the irresistible force. Nobody elected anyone in the FBI, CIA, DOJ, DHS, NSA or any of the other intel agencies. They are all part of the Executive Branch of the government and serve at the pleasure of the only elected official in the Executive Branch, the President of the United States.
Each member of the Executive Branch takes an oath to uphold the Constitution. The same Constitution that empowers the President, not them. The Federal bureaucracy has no legitimate role as a check on the President. The President is NOT answerable to federal bureaucrats. To act in ways that undermine the President is in fact, sedition.
18 USC §2384 defines Seditious Conspiracy as:
“Two or more persons who conspire to overthrow, put down or destroy by force the Government of the United States.” It further defines seditious conspiracy to include, “oppose by force the authority of [the United States], or by force to prevent, hinder or delay the execution of any law of the United States….”
By this definition, anyone in the Federal government who is conspiring with others to thwart President Trump’s policies, could be prosecuted for seditious conspiracy under 18 USC §2384.
The Constitution is unambiguous as to who leads the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. Article II §1 of the Constitution states:
“The executive power shall be vested in the President of the United States of America…[The President] may require the opinion, in writing, of the principle officer in each of the Executive Departments, upon any subject relating to the duties of their respective offices.”
The President is now in a struggle with his own executive branch and their allies in the media, looking to overthrow his administration, which was legitimately elected.
If their efforts are successful, the Constitution itself will have been overthrown. No President in the future, whether duly elected but out of favor with the news media and the federal bureaucracy, can ever be safe from this kind of outrageous behavior.
If the permanent government, with the support of the news media can collude to oust any President they don’t like, then the People have been totally disenfranchised and their voices have been silenced.
In his Second Treatise on Civil Government, John Locke described the only possible solution to this eventuality:
“Whensover, therefore, the legislature shall transgress this fundamental rule of society, and either by ambition, fear, folly or corruption, endeavor to grasp for themselves or put into the hands of any other, an absolute power over the lives, Liberties and estates of the People, by this breach of trust, the government forfeits the power the People had put in their hands and it devolves to the people who have the right to resume their original Liberty and to provide [for it].”
Let us pray we never arrive at the point where our media and Federal bureaucracy act without the consent of the people under the Constitution. That will be a dark day for America and an even darker one for the seditious conspirators.
