Dems see Pence as 'total disaster'

Democrats already angered by Donald Trump’s candidacy blasted his running mate Mike Pence as even more extreme than someone will hurt LGBT and women’s rights.

“So much for the Donald’s reputation as an outside the box, outside-the-beltway candidate,” Democracy for America President Karly Wallace Thompson wrote. “This is just further proof that despite his campaign trail claims, Donald Trump plans to govern like any other Tea Party Republican would — meaning he would be a complete and total disaster for women, people of color and working families across America.”

Democrats argued that Trump and Pence agreed on tax cuts to high earners, defunding Planned Parenthood, deporting immigrants already residing in the United States and repealing the Affordable Care Act. Although Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called Trump and Pence “a job-creating, America First ticket,” Democrats believe they’d be bad for the economy and middle class families.

“This decision proves that he does not stand with working families. Mike Pence might be the right choice for Donald Trump, but he’s the wrong choice for America,” AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said in a statement. “Mike Pence once again proves Donald Trump’s true priority of assaulting the rights of working people and helping corporate CEO’s line their pockets.”

The Alliance for Retired Americans added that Pence would endanger “the protection and expansion of their earned Social Security and Medicare benefits.”

In 2015, Pence spearheaded the Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which aims to protect religious liberty, but many claimed that it was discriminatory towards LGBT people. Pence also opposes abortion and taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.

“Donald Trump just doubled down on his agenda of hate and discrimination by choosing the notoriously anti-LGBTQ Mike Pence for his ticket,” Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said. “Mike Pence has never left any question about his animus toward LGBTQ people,” and his positions are “shared by Trump.”

Some believe that Pence makes the presumptive GOP nominee easier to defeat in November.

“Pence will certainly do nothing to bring back the moderate disaffected Republicans that are the Clinton campaign’s best chances for pickups,” a Washington Democrat who worked with both the Obama and Clinton administrations told the Washington Examiner.

The same Democrat contended that Pence on the ticket could hurt Republicans running in swing Senate states, such as Mark Kirk, Kelly Ayotte, Rob Portman and Pat Toomey, because Pence will likely very present in their states leading up to November.

As Democratic voters gathered at a Hillary Clinton campaign rally on Thursday night just after the news leaked, they shared similar distaste for Pence. Clinton was campaigning with Sen. Time Kaine, one of her potential running mates. Kaine speaks fluent Spanish and would aide Latino outreach.

“I don’t think Pence understands minorities or diverse populations either. I don’t know what his experience with minorities is, and Trump definitely needs that. He thinks America’s only white and he’s totally wrong,” Marcel Vonvancano, a Virginia voter and a member of the immigration reform union Liuna, told the Examiner.

Washington, D.C., voter James Walker added, “I don’t know much about Pence, but I don’t think Trump can save himself with a VP pick.”
